Keratin 18 pseudogene 54 (KRT18P54) is a processed pseudogene in the human genome, related to the functional keratin 18 (KRT18) gene. Unlike the active KRT18 gene, KRT18P54 does not encode a protein and is presumed to be nonfunctional, with no established role in physiology or disease. Pseudogenes such as KRT18P54 arise through gene duplication or retrotransposition events and generally lack the regulatory elements and open reading frames necessary to produce functional protein products[6][2]. The functional KRT18 is an intermediate filament protein involved in the structural integrity of epithelial cells and has recognized roles in cancer diagnosis and prognosis[1][3][7], but these activities are not shared by the pseudogene KRT18P54.
