Overview

Keratin 18 pseudogene 7 (KRT18P7) is a pseudogene that shares sequence similarity with the functional keratin 18 gene (KRT18), a type I intermediate filament gene[5][6][7][8]. Pseudogenes are non-functional segments of DNA that resemble normal genes but typically lack the ability to encode a functional protein due to mutations or disruptions in their sequence[8]. KRT18P7 is one of several KRT18-related pseudogenes found in the human genome as processed pseudogenes—these arise from reverse-transcribed mRNA sequences integrated into the genome, particularly notable for keratins 8 and 18, whose pseudogenes are the most numerous within the keratin gene family[7][8]. KRT18P7 does not encode a functional protein, has no known biological function, is not associated with disease, does not interact with any drugs, and is not used as a biomarker. Its parental gene, KRT18, encodes an intermediate filament protein involved in epithelial cell structure and is a known biomarker for several epithelial-derived cancers; however, KRT18P7 itself is not clinically or pharmacologically relevant as a target[4][6][7][8].
