Overview

Keratin 19 pseudogene 1 (KRT19P1) is a non-functional pseudogene related to the KRT19 gene, which encodes the type I cytoskeletal protein keratin-19. Unlike functional keratin genes, KRT19P1 does not encode a protein. Its sequence similarity to KRT19 can result in cross-reactivity and misdetection in molecular diagnostic tests, especially those utilizing reverse transcriptase PCR for tumor cell identification, and this has been a recognized confounder in cancer biomarker research[1][2][7]. The actual keratin 19 protein (KRT19, CK19) is involved in cellular structure and is a proven cancer biomarker, but KRT19P1 should not be confused with the functional KRT19 gene/protein[1][4][7].

Biological functions

Other (No protein or typical gene product; does not have a biological function)
03

Disease associations

Other (Can interfere as a false positive in molecular biomarker assays for cancer, especially where KRT19 is used as a marker[1][7])
04

Safety considerations

Interference in molecular diagnostic assays: Presence of KRT19 pseudogene transcripts may result in false positive results in RT-PCR-based detection of KRT19 in cancer diagnostics, particularly in assays for disseminated tumor cells[1][7].
05

Biomarkers

Source of false positives when detecting KRT19 (CK19) mRNA in tumor cell detection assays (can lead to misinterpretation in cancer diagnostics, especially RT-PCR-based tests)[1][7]
