Keratin 223 pseudogene (KRT223P) is a human type I keratin pseudogene, meaning it is a genomic sequence resembling a keratin gene but is nonfunctional and does not code for a protein. Pseudogenes like KRT223P arise through evolutionary gene loss or inactivation and form part of the extended keratin gene family categorization. The KRT223P locus is included in current keratin gene nomenclature for completeness; however, there is no evidence for its involvement in disease or as a functional molecular target. In some other mammalian species, active counterparts of the KRT223 sequence exist, but in humans, it remains a pseudogene without coding capacity[1][2][3][4].
