Overview
Keratin 77 (KRT77) is a type II intermediate filament protein encoded by the KRT77 gene on chromosome 12q13 and is part of the cytokeratin family responsible for imparting structural integrity to epithelial cells[1][2][3][4][7]. KRT77 is specifically expressed in the skin, especially in the granular layer of epidermal keratinocytes, and is absent from acral keratinocytes[2][3]. Its expression is temporally coordinated during epidermal development alongside key differentiation and barrier-forming markers[1]. Aberrant regulation or upregulation of KRT77 has been observed in conditions with disrupted epidermal differentiation, suggesting its value as a marker for immature keratinocytes[1]. KRT77 is associated with several skin and epithelial pathologies, but there are currently no known drugs directly targeting this protein[2][4][7].
