Target intelligence / Profile preview
Keratin 78 (KRT78) is a member of the type II keratin family and encodes a protein with an intermediate filament domain that acts as a structural constituent in epithelial cells. Keratins form a cytoplasmic network of intermediate filaments (~10–12 nm wide) providing a scaffold for mechanical stability and stress tolerance in epithelial tissues. The gene is located in a cluster at chromosome 12p13.13, and its related biological processes include keratinization and organization of cytoskeletal intermediate filaments. While disease associations have been noted with certain cancers and hereditary syndromes, KRT78 itself is not recognized as a classical therapeutic target (like a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or ion channel), nor are there drugs or approved clinical biomarker applications directly targeting this protein.
