Overview

Keratin 8 pseudogene 1 (KRT8P1) is classified as a processed pseudogene related to the keratin 8 gene (KRT8), a type II intermediate filament protein expressed in epithelial cells[5][7]. Unlike the functional KRT8 gene, which encodes a protein involved in maintaining structural integrity and signal transduction in epithelial cells, KRT8P1 does not produce a functional protein. It is a noncoding DNA sequence present in the human genome, likely arising through gene duplication or retrotransposition events, and is generally considered nonfunctional. Pseudogenes like KRT8P1 are not categorized as drug targets or disease genes and are not involved in cellular or molecular functions[5][7]. Note: If a therapeutic or diagnostic context for KRT8P1 is claimed, there may be an error or confusion with the functional protein-coding gene "Keratin 8 (KRT8)", which is a marker in liver and cancer pathology, but this does not apply to KRT8 pseudogenes[2][3][4].
