Keratin 8 pseudogene 13 (KRT8P13) is a processed pseudogene derived from the keratin 8 gene, a member of the type II intermediate filament keratin gene family. Unlike functional keratin genes, KRT8P13 contains no intact reading frame, does not produce protein, and has no known biological function or therapeutic relevance. The human genome contains dozens of KRT8-derived pseudogenes scattered across multiple chromosomes, almost all of which are inactive, non-coding gene fragments or processed pseudogenes, including KRT8P13[1][2][7][10]. Pseudogenes like KRT8P13 are remnants of past gene duplications or retrotranspositions and are included in nomenclature databases for genome annotation purposes but are not considered viable drug or biomarker targets. The parent gene, keratin 8 (KRT8), is important in epithelial cytoskeleton structure and some disease contexts, but none of these properties are attributable to KRT8P13 itself[1][2].
