Processed pseudogenes like KRT8P17 are generated by reverse transcription of mature mRNA and integration back into the genome, typically lacking regulatory elements and introns, which renders them nonfunctional. KRT8P17 is one of many keratin 8 pseudogenes found throughout the human genome; these processed pseudogenes do not code for proteins and are not associated with known physiological or pathological functions[1][5][7].
