Keratin 8 pseudogene 38 (KRT8P38) is a non-coding DNA sequence classified as a pseudogene related to the keratin 8 gene family. Pseudogenes arise from gene duplication or retrotransposition but lose their protein-coding potential due to mutations or lack of regulatory elements; thus, they do not produce functional protein products. KRT8P38 does not participate in cytoskeletal structure, cellular signaling, or disease mechanisms and is not a receptor, enzyme, or molecular drug target. In contrast, functional keratin 8 (encoded by KRT8) is a type II intermediate filament protein involved in epithelial cell structure and has roles in protecting cells from stress and apoptosis. There is no evidence that KRT8P38 is clinically relevant or therapeutically actionable.
