Keratin 8 pseudogene 42 (KRT8P42) is a non-coding sequence in the human genome that closely resembles the KRT8 gene, which encodes keratin 8, a critical type II intermediate filament protein expressed in epithelial cells. KRT8P42 is one of several processed pseudogenes derived from KRT8, meaning it arose by the reverse transcription and genomic integration of KRT8 mRNA or cDNA. Processed pseudogenes like KRT8P42 lack regulatory elements, contain disruptions such as frameshifts or premature stop codons, and do not produce any functional protein. There is no evidence that KRT8P42 is expressed or that it contributes to cellular biology, disease, or is a therapeutic target[5][7].
