Keratin 8 pseudogene 5 (KRT8P5) is a non-functional processed pseudogene derived from the keratin 8 gene, part of the type II keratin gene family. While the primary keratin 8 gene encodes a cytoskeletal intermediate filament protein found in epithelial cells and is important for structural integrity and certain disease processes, KRT8P5 itself does not encode a protein and is presumed biologically inactive. Pseudogenes like KRT8P5 are considered remnants of gene duplication or retrotransposition events and are not typically transcribed or translated into functional products. Due to the high number of keratin 8 pseudogenes in the human genome, KRT8P5 is one of many such processed DNA sequences without known direct functional significance.
