Keratin-associated protein 1-4 (KRTAP1-4)

Target
KRTAP1-4
Molecular classification
Other, Structural protein, Keratin-associated protein family
01

Overview

Keratin-associated protein 1-4 is a high-sulfur protein abundantly present in the matrix that embeds keratin intermediate filaments within the hair cortex[3]. It contributes to the formation of a rigid and resistant hair shaft by extensive disulfide bond crosslinking, due to its high cysteine content, with hair keratins[3]. The KRTAP family is divided into subclasses based on amino acid composition, and KRTAP1-4 belongs to the high-sulfur keratin-associated proteins. While KRTAP1-4 is vital for hair fiber integrity and mechanical properties, it is not considered a therapeutic target, receptor, enzyme, or druggable protein, but rather a structural component critical to hair health[3][5]. No specific drugs, biomarkers, or safety concerns are associated with this protein.
