Keratin-associated protein 1-4 is a high-sulfur protein abundantly present in the matrix that embeds keratin intermediate filaments within the hair cortex[3]. It contributes to the formation of a rigid and resistant hair shaft by extensive disulfide bond crosslinking, due to its high cysteine content, with hair keratins[3].
