Overview

Keratin-associated protein 1-5 (KRTAP1-5) is a structural protein belonging to the keratin-associated protein (KAP) family, specifically the high sulfur subgroup. KRTAP1-5, encoded by the KRTAP1-5 gene on chromosome 17q12-q21, contributes to the formation and mechanical strength of hair fibers. It achieves this by forming a matrix around the keratin intermediate filaments in the hair cortex, significantly contributing to the rigidity and resistance of the hair shaft through extensive disulfide bond cross-links with cysteine-rich hair keratins. This protein displays family-specific terminal regions and participates primarily in the structural organization of hair, rather than signal transduction or regulatory cellular pathways. There are no well-established pharmacological agents that target KRTAP1-5, nor is it considered a therapeutic or diagnostic target, and its most significant biological role is structural support in hair fibers[1][4].
