Keratin-associated protein 10-7 (KRTAP10-7) is a structural protein encoded by the KRTAP10-7 gene. It is expressed in the hair cortex, where it contributes to hair structure and rigidity by forming part of the interfilamentous matrix that embeds hair keratin intermediate filaments. KRTAP10-7 and related keratin-associated proteins are extensively cross-linked with hair keratins via disulfide bonds, primarily due to abundant cysteine residues. This cross-linking is essential for the resistance and mechanical strength of the hair shaft. While KRTAP genes and proteins play critical roles in hair fiber assembly, they are not considered therapeutic targets (such as receptors, enzymes, or transporters) in disease. Mutations or variations in keratin-associated proteins, including KRTAP10-7, can influence hair properties and may be associated with certain hair disorders but are not currently linked to major diseases or targeted by drugs
