Keratin-associated protein 10-8 (KRTAP10-8) is a protein-coding gene belonging to the large family of keratin-associated proteins (KRTAPs), which are essential structural components of the hair shaft[1][4]. This protein is classified as a high-sulfur KRTAP, characterized by a substantial cysteine content that enables extensive disulfide bond formation with hair keratin intermediate filaments, imparting strength and rigidity to the hair[4]. KRTAP10-8 is primarily expressed in the hair cortex, where it forms part of the interfilamentous matrix embedding keratin intermediate filaments[1]. The gene is not known to act as a therapeutic target, nor is it associated with enzymatic, receptor, transporter, or signaling activities. While KRTAP10-8 has been weakly associated with certain conditions like trochlear nerve disease and nodular basal cell carcinoma, its primary biological relevance is in the determination of hair properties such as fiber strength and morphological diversity[1][3][4].
