Overview

Keratin-associated protein 10-9 (KRTAP10-9) is a protein encoded by the KRTAP10-9 gene and is a component of the interfilamentous matrix in the hair cortex, where it contributes to the formation of a rigid and resistant hair shaft. It achieves this via extensive disulfide bond cross-linking with cysteine-rich keratin proteins. The KRTAP10 family represents high-sulfur proteins that, together with keratins, determine the mechanical and physical properties of hair. The gene is expressed within hair-producing cells (trichocytes), and its expression is highly specific to hair tissue, with crucial roles in hair fiber formation. Although certain KRTAPs are expressed in other tissues or have roles outside the hair follicle, there is no current evidence that KRTAP10-9 is a direct therapeutic target or is involved in drug interactions or common human pathologies beyond possible gene associations.
