Overview

Keratin-associated protein 11-1 (KRTAP11-1) is a structural protein predominantly found in the hair cortex, where it forms part of the interfilamentous matrix embedding hair keratin intermediate filaments[1][2]. It plays a critical role in forming a rigid and resistant hair shaft through extensive disulfide bond cross-linking with the cysteine residues of hair keratins[1][2][6]. KRTAP11-1 belongs to the family of high-sulfur keratin-associated proteins, a group essential for hair and nail integrity in mammals[1][6]. While it is not considered a therapeutic target such as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter, mutations or abnormalities in KRTAP11-1 are associated with specific hair and nail disorders, most notably ectodermal dysplasia 4, hair/nail type[1]. There are no known small molecules, drugs, or biologics that directly target this protein, and it is not typically used as a biomarker in clinical settings[1][2][6].
