Overview

Keratin-associated protein 12-3 (KRTAP12-3) is a member of the keratin-associated protein (KAP) family, specifically falling within the "high sulfur" group due to its high content of sulfur-rich amino acids such as cysteine. These proteins are primarily expressed in the hair follicle cortex, where they tightly associate with keratin intermediate filaments to contribute to the structure, stability, and properties of hair fibers. KRTAP12-3 is not classified as a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or classic therapeutic target, but rather acts as a structural protein. Defects in keratin-associated proteins can affect hair texture, strength, and appearance, but specific disease associations for KRTAP12-3 have not been documented in the current biomedical literature[3].
