Overview

Keratin-associated protein 13-1 (KRTAP13-1) is a high-sulfur structural protein found in the hair cortex, where hair keratin intermediate filaments are embedded in a matrix of keratin-associated proteins. KRTAP13-1 stabilizes and strengthens the hair shaft by forming extensive disulfide bonds with abundant cysteine residues of hair keratin proteins[2][3][5]. Its role is primarily in hair fiber development and quality, particularly in sheep and humans, and it is not considered a therapeutic drug target. Genetic variation in related KRTAP13 family genes can influence fiber traits in wool, though KRTAP13-1 itself has not shown such associations[1][2].
