Overview

Keratin-associated protein 13-2 (KRTAP13-2) is a structural protein belonging to the keratin-associated protein (KAP) family, notably involved in the formation and structural integrity of the hair and wool fiber shaft[3][5]. It is classified as a high-sulfur KAP, characterized by high cysteine content, which allows extensive disulfide bond formation with hair keratin intermediate filaments, resulting in increased rigidity and resilience of hair or wool[2][3]. The gene is expressed in the hair shaft, particularly in the cuticle and cortex, supporting structural roles in mammalian integument. Variation in KRTAP13-2, particularly in sheep, has been associated with differences in fiber diameter uniformity, suggesting its potential use as a genetic marker for selective breeding of wool quality traits[1]. There are currently no known therapeutic drugs, safety concerns, or major pathological roles associated with this protein in humans.
