Overview

Keratin-associated protein 15-1 is a structural protein encoded by the KRTAP15-1 gene and is a member of the keratin-associated protein (KAP) family, which forms part of the matrix surrounding and cross-linking hair keratin intermediate filaments[1][2][3][5]. It is predominantly expressed in secondary hair follicles and contributes to the creation of a rigid and resistant hair shaft via extensive protein–protein interactions and possible disulfide bonds[1][3][5]. In species such as goats and sheep, genetic variants of KRTAP15-1 are associated with economically relevant fiber properties (e.g., mean fiber diameter), especially in the context of cashmere and wool production[1][2]. There is no evidence that KRTAP15-1 is a therapeutic target for drug development or involved in disease mechanisms in humans. Its primary functional significance is in animal fiber quality and textile applications[1][2][3].
