Target intelligence / Profile preview
Keratin-associated protein 19-1 is a structural protein encoded by the KRTAP19-1 gene, predominantly localized in the cytosol and associated with intermediate filaments in hair fibers[2][4]. It belongs to a large family of keratin-associated proteins involved in the formation and strength of hair and wool, interacting with keratin filaments through extensive disulfide bonds formed by cysteine residues[3][5]. Members of this family confer physical properties such as rigidity and resilience to hair, and are classified by their amino acid composition—including high glycine and tyrosine content in KRTAP19-1[1][5]. While not a therapeutic target, mutations or dysregulation in KRTAP genes may contribute to certain hair structural abnormalities. This protein has limited expression outside hair follicle tissues, and no major disease associations or drug interactions are reported[5][6].
