Overview

Keratin-associated protein 19-3 is one of the many small proteins that bind to hair cortex keratins via extensive disulfide bonding, contributing to the rigidity and mechanical properties of hair shafts and wool fibers. It is primarily characterized by a high content of glycine and tyrosine residues. Unlike cytoskeletal keratins (e.g., KRT19), keratin-associated proteins such as KRTAP19-3 do not form intermediate filaments but co-localize and interact with them in hair and wool. There is little evidence of involvement in classic signaling pathways, cellular processes beyond hair formation, or therapeutic targeting. Its sequence, function, and clinical relevance should not be confused with cytoskeletal keratins (such as Keratin 19, KRT19), which have well-established roles in carcinomas and epithelial cell biology[1][2][3].
