Keratin-associated protein 19-5 is a member of the keratin-associated protein (KAP) family, specifically classified as a high glycine and tyrosine (HGT) rich protein. KAPs form the matrix that embeds keratin intermediate filaments within the hair cortex. In sheep, KRTAP19-5 variation is associated with differences in wool fiber curvature, indicating its structural role in determining the physical properties of fibers. The gene exhibits high sequence diversity in sheep, but its ortholog in humans is also present, though human expression in hair follicles has not been confirmed[1][2][5]. There is no evidence this protein functions as a receptor, enzyme, or traditional druggable target, nor is it currently linked to any human disease or therapeutic interventions. KRTAP19-5 is primarily studied in livestock genetics, especially for the influence of its variants on wool properties, where it serves as a candidate marker for breeding programs[1]. In humans, it is annotated at the gene and protein level but has no known pathophysiological or pharmacological relevance[5]. It is part of the structural framework for the formation and resilience of hair and wool fibers, but not involved in metabolic, signaling, or regulatory functions[2][5].
