Overview

Keratin-associated protein 19-6 (KRTAP19-6) is a member of the keratin-associated protein (KRTAP) family, which plays a key structural role in the formation of the hair shaft[3][4]. In the cortex of the hair, keratin intermediate filaments are embedded within an interfilamentous matrix created by KRTAPs. These proteins possess abundant cysteine residues, enabling them to form extensive disulfide cross-links with hair keratins, which imparts rigidity and mechanical resistance to hair fibers[3][4][5]. KRTAP19-6 is one of several KRTAPs that contribute to the physical properties of hair and wool in mammals but is not known to function as a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or direct therapeutic target[2][4]. It is classified as a structural protein rather than a signaling or disease-oriented molecule. Variations in KRTAP19-6, along with other KRTAPs, may influence hair characteristics such as texture and strength, but there is currently no evidence for KRTAP19-6 being a direct target in human therapeutic applications[1][2][4].
