Overview

Keratin-associated protein 19-7 is a member of the keratin-associated protein (KRTAP) family, which are non-keratin structural proteins found primarily in the hair cortex[2][1][3]. These proteins help form the interfilamentous matrix that embeds hair keratin intermediate filaments. Extensive disulfide bond cross-linking with cysteine-rich hair keratins gives the hair shaft its rigidity and strength[2]. KRTAPs are classified by their amino acid composition, such as high-sulfur, high glycine, or high tyrosine types, and they play a key role in the structural and mechanical properties of hair and wool[1][3]. KRTAP19-7 is predicted to be located in the cytosol and, like other KRTAPs, is responsible for proper assembly and stabilization of hair fibers[2]. There is no evidence suggesting its involvement in canonical signaling processes, drug targeting, or use as a clinical biomarker.
