Overview

Keratin-associated protein 19-8 (KRTAP19-8) is a member of the keratin-associated protein family, which is essential for the structural properties of hair. In the hair cortex, keratin intermediate filaments are cross-linked into a robust, resistant matrix by keratin-associated proteins, mediated by disulfide bonding with high cysteine content. Family members are primarily localized to the cytosol within hair-producing cells and do not have recognized signaling, catalytic, or receptor activities. KRTAP19-8 is a structural protein key to hair fiber formation, classified among high-sulfur or high-glycine/tyrosine KRTAPs that give hair its physical properties. No known drugs target KRTAP19-8, and it is not used as a biomarker or considered a therapeutic target. The main biological relevance is restricted to hair and fur morphology. There is no evidence that KRTAP19-8 plays a major direct role in human disease or pharmacotherapy. The "molecular classification" is "Other" since this protein does not fit receptor, enzyme, ion channel, transporter, or transcription factor categories.
