Overview

Keratin-associated protein 2-1 (KRTAP2-1) is a member of the keratin-associated protein family, specifically a high-sulfur protein that forms part of the structural matrix in the hair cortex[1][2][3]. These proteins are essential for hair shaft formation, binding to keratin filaments and contributing to hair’s rigidity and resilience by extensive cross-linking through disulfide bonds formed between cysteine residues[1][2]. KRTAP2-1 shows highest expression in skin but is also expressed at lower levels in other tissues including heart and lung, with variations observed between species and even across different hair or wool types[2]. It is not considered a therapeutic target (enzyme, receptor, transporter, etc.), but rather a structural protein important for hair and wool properties. There are no known direct drug interactions, disease associations, or safety concerns. Genetic polymorphisms in KRTAP2-1 may influence hair fiber characteristics in mammals[2].
