Overview

Keratin-associated protein 20-2 (KRTAP20-2) is a member of the high glycine-tyrosine family of keratin-associated proteins, primarily expressed in the secondary hair follicles of mammals such as goats, sheep, and humans[1]. It encodes a small structural protein (62–65 amino acids in mammals) rich in glycine, tyrosine, serine, and cysteine. KRTAP20-2 is not expressed in major internal organs but is highly specific to hair follicles involved in fiber production[1]. In livestock, genetic variants of KRTAP20-2 are associated with differences in fiber traits such as cashmere weight, fiber length, and curliness, making it a candidate marker gene for breeding programs[1][2]. There is no current evidence indicating KRTAP20-2 is involved in human disease or that it is a therapeutic target. Its primary biological function is to contribute to the physical properties of hair and wool fibers through its role in hair shaft structure[1][2].
