Keratin-associated protein 21-1 (KRTAP21-1)

Target
KRTAP21-1
Molecular classification
Other (It is not a receptor, ion channel, enzyme, transporter, transcription factor, or any common drug target class—it is a member of the keratin-associated protein family[1][2][4].)
01

Overview

Keratin-associated protein 21-1 is one of several structural proteins that form a matrix embedding keratin intermediate filaments in hair and wool fibers[1][2][4]. These proteins, rich in glycine and tyrosine, contribute to fiber properties such as water absorption and texture. KRTAP21-1 is expressed primarily in hair and wool-producing cells and plays a role in determining wool yield and fiber traits in sheep; its variation is associated with wool production traits and may serve as a genetic marker in animal husbandry[1]. There is no indication of therapeutic roles, disease associations, or pharmacological targeting in humans.

02

Biological functions

Structural component of hair and wool fibersInteracts with keratin intermediate filaments to provide strength and hydration capacity to fibers[1][2]
03

Disease associations

Other (No known direct roles in human diseases; may have genetic marker potential in animal breeding for wool yield[1].)
04

Biomarkers

Wool yield (in sheep: genetic variation in KRTAP21-1 can serve as a marker for wool yield improvement in breeding programs[1].)
