Overview

Keratin-associated protein 21-1-like (encoded by the gene LOC112267897 and annotated as ENSG00000237378 in Ensembl) is a structural protein that belongs to the high glycine-tyrosine (HGT) subgroup of keratin-associated proteins (KAPs) [2][8]. KAPs, together with keratins, form the major protein components of wool and hair fibers, contributing to their mechanical strength, flexibility, and texture. KAP21-1 proteins are especially associated with the orthocortex of fibers and have high content of hygroscopic amino acids such as glycine and serine, imparting water absorption capabilities to the fiber [2]. In sheep, genetic variation in the analogous KRTAP21-1 gene has been linked to differences in wool yield, and may serve as a genetic marker for selective breeding to improve wool traits [2]. There is currently no evidence that this protein is implicated in human diseases, nor is it regarded as a therapeutic drug target or receptor. Note: This entry is a structural protein and not a recognized therapeutic target, receptor, enzyme, transporter, or transcription factor. It is important in the specific context of fiber biology and animal breeding, but not in conventional drug-target relationships or human disease mechanisms [1][2][8].
