Keratin-associated protein 21-2 (KRTAP21-2) is a member of the large KRTAP gene family, which encodes proteins involved in the structure and formation of hair, wool, and fur. These proteins are expressed abundantly in the hair-producing cells (trichocytes) and interact closely with keratin intermediate filaments to form a rigid, cross-linked hair shaft matrix. Their amino acid composition (enriched for sulfur-containing cysteine or glycine/tyrosine, depending on subfamily) is critical for determining the mechanical strength, thickness, and texture of hair fibers[2][4]. KRTAP21-2 is classified as a high-sulfur (or ultra-high-sulfur) KRTAP, based on its sequence characteristics. Although crucial for the normal assembly and properties of mammalian hair, KRTAP21-2 is not considered a pharmacological target, receptor, enzyme, or signaling protein, and has no direct therapeutic or disease-modifying roles[2][4].
