Keratin-associated protein 23-1 (KRTAP23-1) is a member of the keratin-associated protein (KAP) family, which are small, cysteine-rich structural proteins found primarily in hair and nails. KRTAPs cross-link with keratin filaments, contributing to the strength, rigidity, and mechanical properties of the hair shaft via disulfide bonds. Their gene family is large and diversified, especially studied in humans and livestock species; KRTAP23-1 is one of many such proteins, with the most critical biological role related to physical hair structure and quality, but not associated with enzymatic or receptor activity relevant for pharmacological intervention.
