Keratin-associated protein 25-1 (KRTAP25-1)

Keratin-associated protein 25-1 (KRTAP25-1) is a structural protein primarily expressed in the hair cortex, where it plays a critical role in forming the interfilamentous matrix that embeds hair keratin intermediate filaments. It belongs to the large keratin-associated protein family, which contributes to hair fiber strength, rigidity, and flexibility by mediating matrix formation and interactions with keratin filaments. KRTAP25-1 is mainly localized in the cytosol and is classified as a high-sulfur KRTAP subfamily protein. The KRTAP family shows significant diversity among mammalian species and is fundamental to the formation and mechanical properties of hair, but there is no current evidence supporting its role as a conventional therapeutic target, nor associations with major diseases or pharmacological modulation[1][2][3][5][6][7].
