Overview

**Keratin-associated protein 26-1 (KRTAP26-1)** is a structural protein found primarily in the hair cortex, where it forms an interfilamentous matrix around hair keratin intermediate filaments and is essential for forming a rigid, resistant hair or wool shaft through extensive disulfide bond cross-linking with keratin proteins[2][3][1]. It is part of the high-sulfur keratin-associated protein family, but its cysteine content is lower than other high-sulfur KAPs, and it is particularly enriched for serine[1][2]. In livestock, genetic variation in KRTAP26-1 correlates with differences in wool quality and physical properties by affecting fiber diameter and length through its structural role, but evidence to date does not indicate this gene is a direct therapeutic or disease target in humans[1][2].
