Overview

Keratin-associated protein 27-1 (KRTAP27-1) is part of the high-serine, moderate-cysteine subgroup of keratin-associated proteins found primarily in hair and wool fibers. In goats and sheep, variation in the KRTAP27-1 gene is associated with fiber traits such as mean fiber diameter, affecting the tactile and commercial properties of cashmere[1]. The gene is expressed predominantly in skin but shows weak or no expression in other tissues. KRTAP27-1 is involved in forming a protein matrix that interacts with keratin intermediate filaments via disulfide bonds, thereby contributing to the physical properties of the hair and skin structure[1][3]. There is minimal evidence of clinical relevance in human disease or as a therapeutic target; its significance is primarily molecular and agricultural.
