Overview

Keratin-associated protein 28-1 (KRTAP28-1) is part of a family of proteins rich in cysteine and glycine repeats that are involved in the structural integrity of hair and nails. These proteins are unique to mammals and serve as crosslinkers for keratin intermediate filaments through disulfide bonds, contributing to mechanical strength and elasticity. In humans, there are more than 100 distinct KRTAP genes arranged in clusters on several chromosomes, and these proteins vary greatly between species and tissue types. KRTAP28-1 is one of the high/ultrahigh cysteine-content KRTAPs, and its exact function in humans is not fully characterized, but it is presumed to support hair fiber formation and mechanical properties. There is no evidence of pharmacological targeting or disease association for this protein.
