Keratin-associated protein 29-1 (KRTAP29-1) is a member of the large keratin-associated protein (KRTAP) gene family, which consists of proteins that interact with hair keratins to form and determine the structural properties of hair fibers, wool, and fur in mammals. Members of the KRTAP29 subfamily, including KRTAP29-1, are categorized as high-sulfur proteins due to their cysteine-rich amino acid composition, which enables them to form disulfide bonds important for the mechanical strength and resilience of hair. These proteins are expressed mainly in hair follicles where they help shape the morphological characteristics of hair but are not considered receptors, enzymes, drug targets, or disease biomarkers. Their main functional role is structural, and there is no evidence indicating they are used as therapeutic targets or are associated directly with common diseases[1][2][3].
