Overview

Keratin-associated protein 3-1 (KRTAP3-1) is a member of the keratin-associated protein (KAP) family, specifically classified within the high sulfur KAP subgroup. These proteins form an interfilamentous matrix with hair keratin intermediate filaments in the hair cortex, contributing substantially to the structural rigidity and resilience of hair fibers by establishing extensive disulfide bonds with keratin proteins. Each KAP family member, including KRTAP3-1, possesses distinctive amino- and carboxyl-terminal sequences, and the human KRTAP3-1 gene maps to a cluster on chromosome 17q12-q21. Although KRTAP3-1 is a structurally vital gene for hair biology, it is not recognized as a therapeutic target, receptor, enzyme, transporter, or transcription factor, and there are no currently known drugs or therapeutic interventions directly interacting with it.
