Molecular classification
Pseudogene, Keratin-associated protein gene family
01

Overview

Keratin associated protein 4-17, pseudogene (KRTAP4-17P, also known as KRTAP4p3) is a non-protein-coding member of the keratin-associated protein gene family. The KRTAP genes typically participate in the structural matrix of hair, combining with keratin intermediate filaments to provide strength and rigidity to hair fibers. However, pseudogenes such as KRTAP4-17P contain disabling mutations or deletions that prevent them from producing functional proteins, so they play no role in normal protein function, signaling, or disease pathology. Updated naming conventions highlight the "p" suffix to distinguish pseudogenes from coding KAPs, and current knowledge recognizes that pseudogenes are not considered therapeutic or diagnostic targets[5][6][8].
