Keratin-associated protein 4-3 (KRTAP4-3)

Target
KRTAP4-3
Molecular classification
Structural protein, Keratin-associated protein, Member of KRTAP type 4 family
01

Overview

Keratin-associated protein 4-3 is a member of the KRTAP type 4 family, found in the hair cortex. It is part of an interfilamentous matrix embedding hair keratin intermediate filaments, contributing to the formation of a rigid and resistant hair shaft. This structural property is achieved through extensive disulfide bonding with the cysteine-rich hair keratins, especially involving high-sulfur keratin-associated proteins. KRTAP4-3 is coded by the KRTAP4-3 gene (HGNC:18908, NCBI Gene:85290) and is predicted to be cytosolic. Its mutations have minor associations with rare genetic syndromes, but it is not implicated in major disease pathways nor is it pursued for drug development[1][3][6][7].
