Overview

Keratin-associated protein 4-4 (KRTAP4-4) is a protein encoded by the KRTAP4-4 gene in humans. It belongs to the keratin-associated protein (KAP) family, which is characterized by forming the matrix that embeds keratin intermediate filaments in the hair cortex[2][5][6][8][9]. KAP molecules, including KRTAP4-4, play an essential role in determining the physical properties of hair fibers such as resilience and flexibility, but have no established function as enzymes, receptors, channels, or targets for drug development[2][7][8][9]. They are particularly notable for their high sulfur content, which contributes to disulfide bond formation and the structural integrity of hair and wool[7][9].
