Overview

Keratin-associated protein 4-5 (KRTAP4-5) is a structural protein belonging to the keratin-associated protein (KAP) family, specifically the ultrahigh sulfur subgroup. These proteins are important in hair biology, forming a matrix around keratin intermediate filaments in the hair cortex. Their extensive disulfide bond cross-linking with cysteine-rich hair keratins enhances the rigidity and resistance of the hair shaft. Although genetic variants are linked to some diseases, KRTAP4-5 is not considered a therapeutic target, receptor, enzyme, or signaling molecule but rather a tissue-specific structural component important for normal hair structure and integrity
