Keratin-associated protein 4-8 (KRTAP4-8)

Keratin-associated protein 4-8 (KRTAP4-8) is a member of the keratin-associated protein family, found primarily in the hair cortex[2][4][5]. These proteins form the interfilamentous matrix embedding hair keratin intermediate filaments, providing rigidity and resistance to hair shafts via extensive disulfide bond cross-linking with abundant cysteine residues[4]. KRTAP4-8 and other KAPs are essential for normal hair structure and contribute to variation in hair type among mammals[5][6]. Mutations in KRTAP family members may have indirect roles in rare syndromic conditions, but KRTAP4-8 itself is not an established therapeutic target or clinical biomarker[2][4][5].
