Keratin-associated protein 5-3 (KRTAP5-3) is a member of the keratin-associated protein (KAP) family, specifically within the KAP5 subfamily, which are small structural proteins rich in cysteine and/or glycine and are primarily expressed in hair follicles. These proteins are integral to hair fiber structure, where they form cross-links with keratin intermediate filaments, providing mechanical strength and resilience. KRTAP5-3, also referred to by several aliases (such as KAP5.3, KRTAP5-9, and ultrahigh sulfur keratin-associated protein 5.3), is not a therapeutic target, receptor, enzyme, or transporter, nor is it recognized as a drug target or clinical biomarker. Evidence from closely related family members (e.g., KRTAP5-5) suggests KAPs can influence cytoskeletal organization, but a direct role in disease for KRTAP5-3 itself has not been established[2]. This molecule's principal biological function is the stabilization and assembly of hair keratin filaments, and it is mainly studied in the context of structural and developmental biology of hair and wool fibers. There are no drugs, disease biomarkers, or safety concerns currently associated with KRTAP5-3.
