Overview

Keratin-associated protein 8-1 (KRTAP8-1) is a member of the KRTAP gene family, which consists of proteins crucial for the mechanical and structural properties of hair, wool, and fur in mammals[1][3][4]. KRTAP8-1 belongs to the high glycine-tyrosine content subgroup and forms part of the matrix linking keratin intermediate filaments in trichocytes, the hair-producing cells, thereby determining the characteristics of hair fibers[1][3][4]. This protein can bind directly to certain hair keratins, such as keratin K85, and its homologs have even been identified in non-mammalian species, indicating potential physiological roles beyond hair formation[1]. While KRTAP8-1 is fundamental in hair biology, it is not a recognized drug target, nor is it directly implicated in disease or used as a clinical biomarker[1][3][4].
