Overview

Keratin-associated protein 9-1 (KRTAP9-1) is a member of the keratin-associated protein family, which comprises protein-coding genes predominantly expressed in hair follicles and is involved in determining the physical and mechanical properties of hair, wool, and fur. KRTAP9-1 contains characteristic sequence repeats and is part of the high- or ultra-high-sulfur KRTAP subgroup, contributing structurally to hair fibers by binding and interacting with keratins through disulfide linkages. These interactions are critical to the formation and characteristics (e.g., thickness, curliness, strength) of mammalian hair fibers. There is evidence that KRTAP family genes exist in diverse vertebrates and invertebrates, sometimes without obvious hair or fiber structures, suggesting additional physiological roles. KRTAP9-1 is not a recognized drug target, nor is it associated with known human diseases or clinical biomarkers[1][3].
