Keratin-associated protein 9-4 (KRTAP9-4) is a member of the keratin-associated protein (KAP) family, specifically classified within the ultrahigh sulfur KAP subgroup[2]. KAPs form a cross-linked interfilamentous matrix with hair keratins, contributing to the structural integrity and rigidity of the hair shaft by forming extensive disulfide bonds with cysteine-rich hair keratins[2][4]. KRTAP9-4 is encoded by the KRTAP9-4 gene, which is located in a cluster of KAP genes on human chromosome 17q12-q21[2][4]. KRTAPs, including KRTAP9-4, have unique amino- and carboxyl-terminal regions and are distinct from the true keratins that form intermediate filament cores[2][4]. There are no current indications that KRTAP9-4 plays a direct role as a therapeutic target or is implicated in major human diseases, nor are there known drug interactions relevant to this protein. Its primary biological role is in hair fiber assembly and structure[2][4].
