Overview

Keratin-associated protein 9-6 (KRTAP9-6) is a protein encoded by the KRTAP9-6 gene, and is a member of the keratin-associated protein (KAP) family. KRTAP9-6 is rich in cysteine residues, facilitating extensive disulfide bond cross-linking with hair keratins, which strengthens and stiffens the hair shaft structure[4][7]. It belongs to the high/ultrahigh sulfur KAP subgroup[7]. Predicted to be located in the cytosol, KRTAP9-6 is mainly of structural importance in the hair cortex and does not function as an enzyme, receptor, transporter, or any recognized therapeutic target[4][7][8]. There is no current evidence of KRTAP9-6 being directly involved in major diseases or serving as a drug target, biomarker, or pharmacological safety concern.
